I am pleased to let our readers know that the Fifth Annual Meeting of the ECFA Advisory Council will take place at Cliveden House in Berkshire, UK, on the 4th and 5th December 2018.
Last year’s Meeting, also held at Cliveden House, brought together Members of the ECFA Advisory Council, former heads of government and senior ministers, and distinguished guests from the spheres of British and European politics, business, media and academia, among whom we were honoured to count H.E. Kairat Abdrakhmanov, Foreign Minister of the Republic of Kazakhstan and Hon. President of the ECFA, and Sir Alan Duncan, KCMG, MP, Minister of State for Europe and the Americas at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
This year the Council’s guests may include, among others, senior ministers and business leaders from Uzbekistan, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and the Gulf States, and a high level “Belt and Road” delegation from China. Among those guests already confirmed to attend are former US Deputy Energy Secretary Dan Poneman and H.E. Ambassador Peter Burian, EU Special Representative for Central Asia.
On the morning of December 5th the ECFA’s Advisory Council will host a round-table discussion at Cliveden House to mark the publication of its Report on the EU’s new Strategy for Central Asia, which will be announced in the first half of 2019. The Report – for which we have secured a commitment to submit written contributions from the World Bank, the United Nations, EIB, EBRD, OECD, the British and Austrian Foreign Ministries and nine academic research institutions – will provide an authoritative analysis together and conclusions to inform the new EU Strategy. Our plan is to publish it on the ECFA website so that all our readers and subscribers can share the content, and submit it to the European External Action Service for their consideration at the end of the year.
Judging by the initial stages of preparation I fully expect the round-table discussion, and formal dinner the night before in Cliveden House’s beautiful French Dining Room, to be an exciting meeting of minds in an exceptional and historic setting. I will be sure to keep you informed of all developments as they unfold.
