Kassym-Jomart Tokayev wins Kazakhstan’s presidency

10th June 2019 – Incumbent Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev received 70.76% of the vote in Kazakhstan’s presidential election on Sunday 9th June, according to Central Election Commission (CEC) Deputy Chairman Konstantin Petrov at a briefing on preliminary election results.

Tokayev, who assumed the presidency after Nursultan Nazarbayev stood down in January, has already received messages of congratulations by phone from several heads of state, including Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, Kyrgyz President Sooronbay Jeenbekov and Tajik President Emomali Rahmon.

The CEC preliminary results show that Amirzhan Kossanov of the Ult Tagdyry United National Patriotic Movement came in second place with 16.02% of the vote.  Voter turnout was 77.4%.  The final results must be released within 10 days of election day.
